Hansel & Gretel

• The story: If you remember the fairy tale, brother and sister, Hansel and Gretel, are sent off to pick berries in the forest by their mother. They become lost and find their way to the Gingerbread House, where they are kidnapped by a wicked witch. Gretel outwits the witch and frees her brother and other trapped children.

• Sung in English with projected English titles.

• Back story: Every season, Syracuse Opera schedules a production for families. The familiar story and performance in English make "Hansel & Gretel" appealing, says Wolff.

The opera can be approached from two viewpoints -- dark or light. Syracuse Opera opts for the latter and a happy ending.

Its production will be "more faithful to the nicer parts of the fairy tale," says Wolff.

Again, expense is a factor. Syracuse Opera presented "Hansel & Gretel" years ago, so it owns a set, which will be refurbished. Costumes will be rented from the Utah Opera, which mounted a production five years ago
