Syracuse's Local Salt Industry: Tales of Sunken Ships, Solar Technology and Albany Politics
Sun. 9/7/08- Dr. William Meyer a professor of geography at Colgate University who will
discuss the solar technology used in the 19th century to make Onondaga
salt.
Sun. 9/14/08- Dr William Kelly, New York State’s Geologist, will explore the
basics of Onondaga’s famous brine springs and how this natural resource spawned
the industry that created the Salt City.
Sun. 9/21/08- Underwater Explorers Jim
Kennard and Dan Scoville will talk about the challenges of searching for
shipwrecks, specifically their presentation entitled, “Discovery of an Early
19th Century Lake Ontario Schooner” which chronicles the discovery of the
sailing ship, Milan, the oldest commercial vessel found in deep water off the
southern shore of Lake Ontario.
